  98. Can anyone recommend a small battery powered radio that will work well
  99. in a cluttered urban environment (around long apartment corridors in
  100. concrete buildings, etc) and is easy to modify for ``keyed''
  101. transmission (to be received by me or another toy in the same or a
  102. nearby building)?  I need instantaneous (e.g. within, say, 1
  103. millisecond of ``switch closure'') keying.
  104.  
  105. I am looking for any general suggestions, as well as the name of
  106. a specific vendor where I could order a radio for under $300 that
  107. could easily be keyed.  I notice that Radio Shack sells a 440 MHz
  108. radio for $299, but I am uncertain as to whether or not it is easy
  109. to key this transmitter (e.g. by interrupting power to one of the IF
  110. stages while keeping the power only to the RF amp and the frequency
  111. synthesizer).  Even so, perhaps a crystal controlled radio would use
  112. less battery power in standby than a frequency synthesizer radio?
  113. I have tried experiments confirming my toy car with CB radio, but
  114. the CB frequencies are not very optimal for use in typical indoor
  115. environments where I run the toy, and I lose the confirmation signal
  116. if I am upstairs on the third floor and drive into the basement.
  117. Even the cheap business radios (Radio Shack, $119) can do that range!
  118.  
  119. In any case, I am interested in hearing from anyone who has successfully
  120. modified a small radio for keyed operation, or knows of one that already
  121. comes with keying capability.

  164. I am a former Ham (WA2WSQ) and am currently studying for the no-code
  165. tech license (as a starting point).  I was active in 2 meters (about
  166. 15 years ago) and I found my old rig, a Drake TR-22C (you remember,
  167. the one with the fly? :-).  Lo and behold it still receives! (I 
  168. _really_ haven't tried to kerchunk a repeater sans-license, believe 
  169. it or not).

  187. (if they are still there)?  I'm trying to set up a simple (translation: 
  188. cheap) antenna.  I've have heard some of the stronger repeaters but 
  189. I find I remember almost no code :-( and can't copy the IDs.

  191. Once I get a license I'll buy a new HT and save the TR-22C for my
  192. 8 year old who is studying with me.  What is the state of 2m in 
  193. NYC today?  Should I get a dual band HT?
